Taxis in Rio de Janeiro have taximeters by law. A safe bet is to take a Cooperative (they usualy have names starting Coop) or a Yellow Cab that says "radio" on it (look for yellow cabs with a blue stripe). 10/20% more expensive than non-radio cabs, but reliable and safer. If going out of town, work out a price with the driver to wait and bring you back. Its not so easy to get a company to guarantee a car at a later time in rural areas. Tips up to 10%. Brazilian drivers can get a little over excited, leave battle wounded vehicles alone. Cabs are plentiful throughout Rio with the majority being honest. It is illegal for the driver to ask for pre-payment and it usually means he/she has inflated the price. At night it seems acceptable to run red lights.

Passengers will not be able to wave down taxis on the street. No empty taxis, which are being blamed for some of the traffic congestion, will be allowed to operate on the roads.
Passengers will have to call a hotline or go to a particular taxi calling point to get a taxi in the future.
These measures will be supported by a network which will monitor and direct over 45,000 taxis and 360 taxi parking sites throughout the city.
Over 10,000 taxi calling points will be available in Shanghai within the next five years.
A Global Positioning System (GPS) will be added to each taxi and a better communication and security system will be available as the network is established.
All of the 45,000 taxis in Shanghai will join the network by 2007 and according to the local transportation bureau, a basic network will be put into use this year which will cover 4,000 taxis. Statistics from the bureau show that a taxi will run 350 kilometres a day on average and over 45 per cent of the taxis on the road are empty at any given time.

Many unsolicited "taxi drivers" try to get your attention at the airport. Do NOT accept any offer from them as these are not official Parisian taxi drivers (Taxi Parisien). As a general rule, you need to pay the fare in cash. Some, but not all taxis accept credit cards.
Paris taxis come in all colors but all have the same white sign on the roof "Taxi parisien". Many taxis do not not stop if you attempt to flag them down. Lines at taxi ranks (arrêts taxis) can get long in the late afternoon during the week and on weekend nights. Should you call a taxi rather than hail one at a taxi stand, the base fee will increase according to how far away you are and how long it takes the driver to get there.
2004 - The approximate cost from CDG into the Paris city center is 45 euro plus 1 euro each (2004) for additional pieces of luggage. Tip usually 10% or round up the total. Cars booked though hotels usually include a commission.
2006 - Stationary time (at traffic lights and in traffic jams) costs €24.30 per hr. Taxis take three passengers; there is a €2.45 charge for a fourth. Additional charges (€0.90) are added for luggage over 5kg.
The taxi is available when the white sign on the top is lit. You can't hail cabs less then 50 meters from a taxi rank: wait for the 1st cab in the line (but you can chose another eg if you need a larger vehicle).
You have the right to choose your itinerary and, the driver must give you a receipt if asked
The rates are fixed by the 'prefecture de police' ( the fare card is displayed on the rear left window of the car), controlled (the coloured lights under the roof sign are rate indicators) and shown on the meter and through the rear window.
Not all taxis are fluent in english (and with mispronounced french names), have the address and 5 digit postal code written down.

Dont use taxis without insignias of the well known taxi companies on the front doors (Budapest Taxi, Taxi 2000 or 6X6). Hungarians call these smart plain Mercs etc "hyena taxis", with good reason.
17.6 million passengers. Pre-paid taxis, the problem for a first-timer is that you pay for the ticket inside the airport. You ask them where the taxis leave from and they just say 'outside'. So you go outside with your ticket certificate and a hundred people will be in your face and you see taxis and rickshaws all over the place. Finding the taxi with the correct number can seem like a rather difficult task.

In order to hail a taxi anywhere in Iran, one must stand by the roadside and as taxis slow down and roll by, you must yell out the direction in which you wish to travel. If the driver is going in that direction he will stop. If not, he will continue rolling on his way looking for other passengers. For the foreigner unaccustomed to the Iranian procedures of hailing a cab, one might consider practicing by shouting out places that almost no taxi will go, just to get the hang of talking to moving vehicles.
A taxi from each airport to central Tehran takes 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic.
Shared taxis are mostly yellow or orange. If you wish the driver not to pick up any passenger and take you directly to your destination, specify to travel "Darbast". Haggle over the fare. You can also call taxi agencies or ask your hotel to arrange them for you.
Airlines such as Iran air, Iran Aseman, Mahan, Kish Air, and others provide an extensive network of flights to all provincial capitals and places of interest for travellers. Book tickets in advance, availability may be a problem. Using a travel agent is an easy option for reservations.

London's Hackney Carriages was originally a carriage drawn by an ambling horse or mare, but the name is now synonymous with a taxi, particularly London’s black cabs. The English capital’s last horse drawn carriage received its licence in 1946 (and surrendered it in 1947), although some other licensing authorities, such as York, still license horse drawn taxis.
Gas-powered, meter-equipped taxis began operating in London in 1903.
Two-way radios first appeared in taxicabs in the 1940s.
